When you set a goal, it’s like planting a seed. But just as when you plant an acorn and bury it in the ground, you don’t immediately see it grow, it doesn’t mean it isn’t growing. The process of nurturing a goal takes time and patience. There’s a gestation period, an incubation phase, where things are happening beneath the surface—just like when you plant a seed in the ground, you can’t see its roots taking hold, but they are.
If you were to constantly dig up the seed to check on its progress, it would never have the chance to take root and grow. The same applies to your goals. Digging up your efforts in frustration, checking your progress every moment, or doubting your path will only hinder growth. Patience is key. The more you trust the process, the more you allow your goal to manifest.
The Gestation Period of Your Goals
Think about it this way: when you plant a seed, you can’t rush its growth. A carrot seed will germinate in about 70 days, while a baby will develop in the womb for roughly 270 days. There’s a set period for growth, and each type of goal will have its own timeline. You may not know exactly when your goal will manifest—just like you can’t predict when a seed will bloom—but what you can control is how you nurture it.
A botanist can tell you precisely when a seed will germinate. They can observe the conditions and predict with accuracy when the plant will sprout. But with goals, there’s no such formula. We can’t measure with certainty how long it will take for a goal to materialize, as the path to success is never exactly the same for anyone. However, there are universal truths in the process.
Faith, Not Doubt, Speeds Up the Process
You may not know the exact timeline for your goals, but faith is the ingredient that accelerates their manifestation. Just like you wouldn’t tell a mother to give birth before the baby is ready, you can’t force your goals to come to fruition prematurely. They need the right conditions, the right timing, and most importantly, they need your unwavering faith.
When you eliminate self-doubt and truly believe in the inevitability of your goal, you remove the barriers that slow down the process. That’s when progress starts to show. And while you may not know exactly when your goal will reach its full potential, you can trust that, by law, it will manifest.
The Impact of Big Goals and Patience
The bigger your goal, the longer the gestation period may be. Just like how an acorn grows into an oak tree, your biggest, most impactful goals will take longer to manifest because they require a more substantial foundation. But here’s the thing: don’t let the size of your goal discourage you. It’s all about patience and persistence.
Take Bill Gates, for example. He didn’t create Microsoft overnight. He spent years working in his dorm room before launching his company, facing numerous failures and challenges along the way. Even after founding Microsoft, he endured countless obstacles, including competitors, skepticism, and financial struggles. Yet, his vision of creating software that would revolutionize the world of personal computing didn’t waver. It took him over a decade before Microsoft became the household name it is today. Gates kept working with unwavering faith, knowing that success requires time and persistence.
Similarly, the Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur, faced years of rejection and ridicule in their pursuit of powered flight. After countless failures and a lack of financial support, they succeeded in 1903 with the first successful flight. It wasn’t an instant success. They had to fail, learn from their mistakes, and continue pushing forward for over a decade before achieving their breakthrough. What made them successful wasn’t just their technical skill but their ability to stay committed to their long-term vision, despite the years of setbacks.
Just like the development of a baby, it takes time for your big dreams to come to life. No dad would demand a premature birth, just as no entrepreneur should expect instant success. The bigger and more impactful the goal, the more it requires time to properly incubate. Allow yourself the grace to wait, but never stop working towards it.
